New Greenhouse & Birches Planted

New Greenhouse & Birches Planted

Today marked the first plants being moved from my greenhouse down to the new allotment. The plan is to take two trays of plants per visit so hopefully by mid-May everything with be on the new plot. Well, when I say on the new plot, I mean on the new site. You see, the area where the plants will be grown still needs to be weeded but at the moment there are more important tasks on my list.

May 2018: First plants go into the communal greenhouse.

On this allotment site we have a communal greenhouse. I’ve secured myself a space, by an air-vent, and for the time being, all the plants will live in the greenhouse until the area is weeded and ready for them.

May 2018: Dianthus and African Daisies (Osteospermum).

But today, my task was to plant the birch trees which arrived earlier in the week. The area was previously a dumping ground so all morning and most of the afternoon was spent sorting out what could be kept and recycled and what needed to be placed on the communal bonfire.

The sun beat down strongly so the task took long than expected. There were many stops for refreshments and time spent sitting in the shade to escape the heat.

May 2018: The birch trees are planted.

I’ve got three birch trees, each 6ft tall. Two are planted 2ft from the communal path and the other one is around 6ft inside the plot. If all goes according to plan they will grow and give me a shaded area. I haven’t landscaped the area as I want it to look natural, so any lumps and bumps in the ground remain. Each plant had several large buckets of water to welcome them to their new homes.

By early evening I was exhausted so headed home to rest and relax until another busy day tomorrow when my old shed is being taken down, but I’ll tell you more about that another time.

Now it’s time for a cuppa tea.
