Very sad news coming out of the Rhondda this afternoon. Welsh playwright Frank Vickery died this morning. I worked with Frank on a number of projects at the Parc & Dare Theatre in Treorchy, Carmel Chapel in Treherbert and during my first professional theatre role at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff alongside Frank and Menna Trussler.
Frank was a great supporter of new talent and he starred in a Christmas play I wrote. Frank filled the Rhondda and further afield with laughter for many decades. I was once visiting a friend in Westerham just outside London and was surprised to see the local amateur theatre group were performing Trivial Pursuits that evening.
My first professional theatre role was with the Sherman Theatre in Cathays, Cardiff, on his new production Sleeping with Mickey Mouse. A one-woman play with Menna Trussler. This style of writing was a new departure for Frank but won rave reviews.
It was such a pleasure to know Frank and to watch his career develop but I always felt that he never got the recognition he deserved and should have received a New Year’s Queen Honour for the outstanding contribution he made to theatre.
Goodbye Frank x
PS: One o’clock from the house? 🙂
